Caring for a new baby is tough. With a new baby comes more responsibility (feedings, changing diapers, added laundry and more), all with less sleep! Not surprisingly, it takes new parents time to adjust to this life change.
With that in mind, AbbVie recently announced an industry-leading U.S. Parental Leave policy that provides new parents with additional paid and unpaid time off, along with more flexibility to use the leave intermittently in single-day increments to create a reduced work schedule (versus requiring continuous leave). The policy goes into effect on July 1, 2017.
“We’re fostering a culture that supports employees in their efforts to meet their personal priorities while sustaining high performance and engagement to meet business needs,” says Tim Richmond, senior vice president, human resources, AbbVie.
AbbVie recognizes how important it is for new parents, including those who adopt, to have bonding time with a new child. That extra time ultimately leads to better outcomes for children, families and the company.
Parental Leave* | Maternity (Includes 6-8 weeks paid under short-term medical leave) |
|
---|---|---|
Paid Leave at 100% pay | 8 weeks | 14-16 weeks |
Unpaid Leave at 0% pay | 10 weeks | 8 weeks |
Total Leave | 18 weeks | 24-26 weeks |
*Applies to both births and adoptions.
The newly enhanced Parental Leave policy enables eligible employees+ to take up to eight weeks of paid leave and 10 weeks of unpaid leave within 12 months after a birth or adoption. When used intermittently, parental leave is intended to create a reduced work schedule and cover foreseeable time off to ease the employee’s transition back to work.
AbbVie’s approach to benefits, compensation and well-being—what we call Total Rewards—is built to be competitive. But in addition to recognizing and rewarding individual performance, we also offer employees flexibility and support throughout their changing life stages. Learn more about our benefits.
+Parental leave is available to employees who are scheduled to work 20 or more hours a week. Employees with less than six months of service at the time of the qualifying family event are eligible for only the eight weeks of paid benefit.
