Cystic Fibrosis Patients Beat Odds and Follow Their Dreams
Today, students with cystic fibrosis (CF) are living longer and conquering high school, college and even graduate school. AbbVie is proud to assist them through our CF Scholarship program.

In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis (CF) lived long enough to attend elementary school. Since then, tremendous progress in understanding and treating the disease has led to dramatic improvements in the length and quality of life for those with CF.

Today, students with cystic fibrosis are conquering high school, college and even graduate school. Since 1993, AbbVie’s CF Scholarship Program has helped CF students embrace this previously unachievable accomplishment.

We’ve happily awarded more than 900 scholarships and provided more than $2.6 million in educational funding to deserving students like patient Emily Kramer-Golinkoff. In 2011, she shared her story and education goals with us and received a CF Scholarship as one of the 2011Thriving Graduate Students.

Kramer-Golinkoff is a great example of how the scholarship recipients can follow their dreams. She was one of nine individuals named White House Champions of Change for Precision Medicine for her continued leadership, visionary thinking and significant contributions to the CF community. In addition, Kramer-Golinkoff was recognized as one of People magazine’s Hero of the Week earlier this year.

Reflecting on her achievements, Kramer-Golinkoff says, “My graduate education empowered me to find my voice as a patient advocate and fundraiser in the CF community. With my non-profit CF foundation, Emily's Entourage, we have raised over $1.5M in 3.5 years to accelerate research for rare nonsense mutations of CF."
