Today, DiversityInc named AbbVie to its "Top 50 Companies for Diversity
" list. AbbVie secured a place for the fifth year in a row among the ranks of prestigious businesses that make diversity a key component of their management principles.
“Receiving this recognition is an affirmation of all the great work AbbVie has done to date around diversity and inclusion,” says Julie Simak, vice president, diversity and inclusion, AbbVie. “Only in an environment where everyone feels included, can the best ideas come to the surface. Within those are the ideas that lead to world-changing innovations.”
DiversityInc's "Top 50 Companies for Diversity" list stands out from other diversity rankings because it is based entirely on empirical or experience-based data. The survey assesses performance based on these key areas of diversity management, including:
- Talent Pipeline: A company's ability to recruit people of all races, ethnicities, genders and ages
- Talent Development: A company's ability to assesses, retain, engage and promote people from all demographics fairly
- Leadership Accountability: A measurement of the company's visible and accountable involvement of top leadership as well as representation at senior levels and on boards of directors
- Supplier Diversity: An assessment of the effectiveness of supplier development
To participate, an organization must have at least 1,000 employees. DiversityInc evaluates and vets all surveys within an industry to critically assess the four areas.

To amplify the diversity and inclusion work underway, AbbVie recently created a dedicated vice president role, which Simak filled. Simak will provide additional emphasis on our diversity and inclusion priorities across AbbVie.
